Oppo Jesus Christ I think I’m having a crisis.
Back last fall I almost bought a Volvo 780 with a French V6 for 700 American moneys. Instead I bought a 1977 Honda Civic for 300 American moneys. I was very pleased.
The guy never wound up selling the car. He just pulled it around to the front of his shop and stuck the tempting for sale sign back in the window. I went over and talked to him and he said that he had it in the shop all winter. All it needs is some new brakes and a new battery, (yeah fucking right.) Anyways, the offer still stands at 700 American moneys.
Please tell me it’s a bad idea. Tell me that it’s not going to be as I dream it would be. I just can’t get this car out of my head. It’s so beautiful and Swedish and French and Italian. It’s slow and square and gets like 4 miles to the gallon probably. But it’s so amazingly awesome.
I dreamof driving this car up a narrow country club entrance road and emerging facing an enormous club house and a beautiful 18 hole course to my right. I’d take my clubs out of the back of my beautiful 780. Someone would come up to me and say “Wow that’s a beautiful car! What is it?” I’d rip off my sunglasses in a dramatic fashion and reply, “It’s a Volvo.”
Tell me in reality I would catch on fire on the way to the course and my door would fall off and I’d die.
Also tell me everything you know about the PRV V6. I can’t find much info on the interwebs about it. All I hear is they suck if you don’t maintain it, if you do they’re good. Sounds like a normal motor to me.
Please help

It’s either a Great idea or a terrible one, I imagine the car is just rust underneath at this point tho?

The Volvo version of the PRV V6 is perhaps the worst... at least thats what I’ve heard. Apparently Volvo got sort of disenchanted with the design as insisted upon by the other partners, but was already contractually up to their eyeballs in the thing so they kinda half-assed their version just to be done with it (this is internet hearsay, but from Volvo forums...) so I hear... On the other hand, it’s perhaps the prettiest of box-era Volvos and the rest of the driveline and chassis is pretty stout, being a Volvo... you could always cram a Ford 302 in there, or even a turbo or weber-carb’d redblock.

It’d be better to wait and find a 780 with the turbo 4.

A valid question. The 7s are not the most rust-resistant things on the planet.

DOOOO IIITTTTTT Then swap out the SLS in the rear for normals. I almost bought one for $700 USD a couple years ago. It was rough but tempting. They’re just so pretty. Someday...

Ah, craigslist what would I do without you:
Little did I know that the maker of delicious low-effort Italian food also made fine automobiles with luggage interiors.

If the PRV V6 gives you a hard time, there is plenty of Volvo red block engines out there that could give you lots of turbo power.
I want a 780 as well, it’s probably the most oddball Volvo out there together with the 480.

780s are pretty rare, I’ve not seen too many of them in real life. The V6 isn’t like the redblock and wasn’t as durable but it’s the same motor from the DeLorean.. even then who cares; buy it

They’re rust resistant in Sweden

You asked for people to tell you it’s a bad idea, not propose other $700 alternatives. :-p

Yeah... But so far people are making it sound like a fantastic idea. The other 700$ alternative is to keep the 700$ and use it wisely

The 780 is a pretty cool car, and got the best version of the PRV V6 that we ever got in the US. They’ll well exceed 200,000 miles if serviced well. The problem with the cars is the cost of the unique engine, body and trim bits, which is exorbitant because they were only ever used on the limited-production 780. El_Uly did a post some time back on what some of that stuff costs, if it’s even available. Volvo pulled a Fiero with these, they fixed the PRV’s issues, sorted it all out, built it for a couple years, and killed it. The B230FT cars use off the shelf engines that are everywhere, so they’re a bit easier to deal with.
